Although I have been in the MUN club for two years now, I still feel nervous when giving presentations or speeches. The assignment of making a persuasive speech was an opportunity for me to gain more confidence as well as become more comfortable speaking in front of my classmates. Every single time I go up to the podium I have a new goal. I noticed that most of my classmates commented that I need to work on my eye contact and voice. "She should work on more eye contacts with audience." One thing that I noticed while she was speaking is that she didn’t make eye contact enough with the audience. It would be better if she depends less on the paper but make more eye contact." Due to my nervousness I also had trouble controlling my voice and tone. From the evaluations I learned that I need to improve my eye contact, as well as voice in order to conceal the fact that I am nervous.
Apart from eye contact and voice, my peers explained how my introduction was confusing. The dog analogy in the beginning was not clear to most of my classmates. This proved how I need to improve on writing introductions for persuasive speeches. I should have come up with a more understandable analogy that clearly explains my opinion on the issue. From this assignment I was able realize what I need to improve on. This assignment was especially helpful because I was able to hear the opinions of my peers. The peer evaluations helped me pinpoint what I need to improve on, as well as what I did well. Overall, giving a persuasive speech was a new challenge for me that helped me see what writing skills or speaking skills I need to improve on.
